The National Chiao Tung University (NCTU) is a distinguished public research university situated in Hsinchu, Taiwan. Established in 1896, it is one of the oldest institutions of higher education and research established in conformity with the western education system.
The university was started as Nanyang College in the suburbs of Shanghai. Founded to foster western civilization in China, the college first offered courses in law, politics, and translation of western books. After the birth of the Republic of China in 1912, the institution was renamed Shanghai Industrial College, before being formally renamed the National Chiao Tung University in 1958.
At present, NCTU is one of the seven prestigious universities in Taiwan selected by the country’s Ministry of Education as a center for research. The university is renowned for its research excellence in engineering and science, particularly in electronics, information communication, and optoelectronics. In recent years, NTCU has also entered the emerging biomedical electronics field and it is also developing problem-solving-oriented innovations in engineering.
The university has five campuses including the Guangfu Campus, the university’s main campus which is located in close proximity to the Hsinchu Science Park. The other campuses include Boai Campus, Taipei Campus, Liujia Campus, and Tainan Campus. In addition, NCTU has several research centers including the Brain Research Center, the Disaster Prevention and Water Environment Research Center, and the Nanoelectronics and Infotronic Systems Research Center.
In terms of education, NCTU consists of twelve colleges including the schools of Electrical Engineering, Engineering, Information, Hakka Culture, Science, Management, Biotechnology, Optoelectronics, Science and Technology Law, Humanities and Society, Smart Technology and Green Energy, and International Semiconductor Industry. The predominant language of instruction at NCTU is Chinese, though few graduate-level programs are taught in English.
The National Chiao Tung University offers more than 140 programs of studies including Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Doctoral programs. About 12,000 students take these courses and programs at the research-oriented university. In addition, the institution has over 590 faculty members tasked with helping students acquire knowledge and hands-on experience to solve the challenges of the present world.
In terms of facilities, NCTU provides housing facilities for undergraduate and graduate students. Its library is situated at the heart of the university main square for accessibility. Occupying 32,000 square meters, the library provides the space and selection of books (approximately one million volumes of printed text) that students need to excel in.
Thanks to its excellence in research, the National Chiao Tung University has developed several breakthrough technologies. Most notably, in 2020, the university created the first comprehensive quantitative detection system for antibodies against coronary pneumonia. In the same year, the institution won the brain tumor segmentation competition for training surgical Artificial Intelligence (AI) assistants.

Our research was coordinated by Imed Bouchrika, PhD, a computer scientist with a well-established record
of collaboration on a number of international research projects with different partners from the academic
community. His role was to make sure all data remained unbiased, accurate, and up-to-date.
