Data Sources and Citation-Based Metrics
The 4th edition of the Research.com Best Medicine Universities in Nigeria Ranking was created using a rigorous approach grounded in reputable bibliometric data sources. Primarily, data was gathered from OpenAlex and CrossRef, complemented by multiple other data repositories to ensure accuracy and comprehensiveness. The bibliometric data foundational to all citation-based metrics in the ranking was systematically collected as of 2024-11-27.
Institutions were evaluated based on the aggregated D-indexes (Discipline H-index) of all eligible scholars whose main publication domain is Medicine and who are affiliated with a given university. The D-index uniquely includes only the publications and citation data pertaining to the specific field under examination, thus reflecting the real influence within Medicine.
Scope and Criteria of Research Evaluation
This ranking draws on an extensive pool of scientific profiles. In total, 279,971 scientist profiles were identified and examined across various disciplines through a complex integration of several bibliometric resources. Specifically for Medicine, 72,221 scientist profiles were analyzed.
To ensure the highest quality of the assessment:
- The qualifying D-index threshold for inclusion was set at 70. Only scientists with a majority of their high-impact publications in Medicine were considered.
- Scientist’s notable awards and achievements in Medicine also factored significantly into inclusion decisions.
- The D-index threshold for top-tier researchers adjusts in increments of 10, depending on the number of scholars in each discipline, ensuring that the top 1% of leading experts are properly represented.
- A proximity of 30% or less was required between a scientist’s general H-index and their D-index to verify that their principal contributions are within Medicine.
- Scientist’s awards and acclaimed achievements in the field were further considered to reinforce the qualitative assessment.
Verification and Quality Control Practices
To assure users of the trustworthiness and depth of this ranking, Research.com undertook extensive verification procedures. Recognizing that bibliometric data alone cannot serve as an absolute measure of scholarly output, every scientist profile was manually reviewed and cross-verified against published materials from a broad array of reputable sources.
Although not directly factored into ranking positions, the number of articles published in top-tier journals and conference proceedings serves as a meaningful secondary metric of a scientist’s impact and engagement within Medicine. The ranking method is grounded in the H-index values derived from OpenAlex and CrossRef, widely regarded as gold-standard bibliometric databases in scholarly communities.
