Data Sources and Ranking Methodology
The 5th edition of the Research.com Best Animal Science and Veterinary Universities in the World Ranking is underpinned by a comprehensive integration of bibliometric data sourced primarily from OpenAlex and CrossRef, supplemented by multiple additional reputable data providers. The citation-based metrics central to this ranking were derived from bibliometric data collected on January 12, 2026. Each institution’s position in the ranking is calculated based on the summation of D-indexes (Discipline H-index) of all affiliated scholars whose primary scholarly output falls within the domain of Animal Science and Veterinary. The D-index is a refined metric that exclusively considers publications and citations within the specific discipline under examination, thereby ensuring discipline-relevant evaluation of scholarly impact.
Scope of Research and Scholar Selection
Our analysis encompassed a total of 279,971 scientist profiles identified across diverse bibliometric data sources, from which 44,676 scientists specializing specifically in Animal Science and Veterinary were rigorously examined. To qualify for inclusion, each scientist must have met a minimum D-index threshold of 20, with the majority of their tier publications concentrated in Animal Science and Veterinary. Additionally, a scientist’s awards and professional achievements within the field were considered significant factors in the evaluation process.
Recognizing the necessity of precision in defining leading scholars, the qualifying D-index threshold for top researchers is adjusted in increments of 10 based on the total estimated number of scholars in each discipline. This approach guarantees the inclusion of the top 1% of leading experts worldwide. Furthermore, to ensure consistency and alignment of scholarly expertise, a proximity criterion was enforced whereby the difference between a scientist’s general H-index and their D-index did not exceed 30%. Awards and accomplishments relevant to the researcher’s primary discipline were also integral to the selection criteria.
Verification and Data Integrity Practices
We acknowledge that raw bibliometric data alone cannot serve as an absolute measure of a scholar’s research output or impact. Accordingly, all scientist profiles were subject to meticulous manual verification and cross-correlation against publications indexed in a broad spectrum of trustworthy sources. While the number of publications in prestigious journals and conference proceedings is not directly factored into the ranking score, it remains a valuable secondary signal of a researcher’s contribution to the discipline.
Positions in the ranking are established primarily through each researcher’s D-index, calculated using data aggregated from OpenAlex and CrossRef—two of the most authoritative and widely respected bibliometric repositories accessible to the academic community.
