Data Sources and Citation Metrics
The 5th edition of the Research.com Best Law Scientists in Australia Ranking is primarily based on data aggregated from OpenAlex and CrossRef, two of the most prominent and reputable bibliometric databases accessible to the research community. These sources were supplemented by multiple other high-quality bibliometric data repositories to ensure comprehensive coverage and accuracy. The bibliometric data used to devise the citation-based metrics for this ranking were collected on January 12, 2026. A scientist’s position in the ranking is determined by their D-index (Discipline H-index), a refined metric that exclusively accounts for papers and citation metrics within the specific discipline under examination—in this case, Law.
Scope of Research Considered
The ranking methodology involved an exhaustive examination of 279,971 scientist profiles identified from a variety of bibliometric data sources across all disciplines, with a focused subset of 19 scientists specifically from Law. To qualify for inclusion, a scientist had to meet a minimum D-index threshold of 20, ensuring that only researchers with substantial impact in their discipline were considered. Additionally, a majority of the scientist’s tier publications needed to be situated within the field of Law. Recognizing that metrics alone cannot fully capture scholarly influence, researchers’ awards and achievements in the field were also taken into account.
The D-index threshold is scaled in increments of 10 based on the estimated total number of scholars within each discipline, guaranteeing that the top 1% of leading scholars are incorporated into the ranking. To further ensure focus and discipline specificity, researchers included generally exhibited a proximity of 30% or less between their overall H-index and their discipline-specific D-index, reflecting consistent expertise within Law.
Additional Verification Practices
We recognize that raw bibliometric data, while valuable, is not an absolute or definitive measure of scholarly output. Consequently, all scientist profiles incorporated into the ranking were manually verified and cross-correlated against publications from a broad range of trustworthy and authoritative sources to uphold accuracy and credibility.
Although the number of papers published in prominent journals and conference proceedings does not directly influence a researcher’s position in the Research.com ranking, it serves as a valuable secondary signal that underscores a scientist’s contribution to their discipline.
The ranking is ultimately established using each researcher’s D-index derived from data consolidated primarily from OpenAlex and CrossRef. These platforms represent the most comprehensive and reliable bibliometric databases available to the scientific community.
