All bibliometric data underlying the ranking were collected as of January 12, 2026. A scientist's position in the ranking is determined by their D-index (Discipline H-index), a metric that exclusively accounts for the number of published papers and citation counts within the specific discipline under review. This ensures that the ranking accurately reflects researchers’ impact and influence strictly in the field of Ecology and Evolution.
Scope of Research and Ranking Criteria
The ranking examined a total of 279,971 scientist profiles aggregated from diverse bibliometric data repositories across all scientific disciplines. Specifically, for the Ecology and Evolution domain, 8,381 scientists were identified and assessed.
To qualify for inclusion in this ranking, researchers were required to have a D-index of at least 30. Additionally, a majority of their high-impact publications needed to fall within the area of Ecology and Evolution. Awards and recognized achievements in the discipline were also considered as an important qualitative factor in assessing prominence.
The threshold for the D-index is adaptively set in increments of 10 relative to the estimated total number of scholars in each discipline. This approach ensures the inclusion of the top 1% of leading experts while maintaining discipline-specific rigor. Furthermore, only profiles demonstrating a proximity of 30% or less between their overall general H-index and their discipline-specific D-index were considered, emphasizing consistent depth of research focus.
Verification Procedures and Methodological Rigor
Recognizing that raw bibliometric data alone cannot serve as an absolute measure of scholarly impact, the Research.com team performed extensive manual verification of all scientist profiles. Profiles were cross-checked against a wide array of trustworthy publication sources to ensure accuracy and validity.
Although the number of papers published in prominent journals and conference proceedings does not directly influence a researcher's ranking position, it is acknowledged as a valuable secondary signal indicating a researcher’s substantive contributions to their specific scientific area.
The final ranking positions are established using each researcher’s D-index, derived from information consolidated predominantly from OpenAlex and CrossRef—two of the most comprehensive and reputable bibliometric databases available to the international research community.
