Overview

The University of Liverpool is a public university known for its high research output and international outlook. It is one of the founding institutions of the Russell Group and among the original ‘redbrick’ universities. The school also collaborates with other esteemed research universities in the country as a member of the N8 Group, while its management college is accredited by the US-based Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business. In addition, Liverpool is the first British university to have an independent campus in China.
Liverpool’s academics are arranged into three faculties (Science and Engineering, Humanities and Social Sciences, and Health and Life Sciences), under which are 35 departments that offer more than 450 undergraduate and postgraduate programs. Undergraduates have the option to combine degrees and select from eight languages to study with. The school’s highly regarded courses include Law, Medicine, Education, Life Sciences, Engineering, Physical Sciences, and Social Sciences.
The university’s main campus occupies around 100 acres, within which are around 200 buildings that house over 100 facilities for instruction and research. Students can stay at any of the 50+ residential buildings that provide over 3,000 rooms found in the vicinity. The school also has a library system that contains over two million physical books, 900,000 ebooks, and 130,000 journals.
In terms of research, the university is known for its interdisciplinary approach. The institution has been recognized for its contributions to computer science, chemistry, agriculture, engineering, archaeology, and food science.
Founded in 1881, the University of Liverpool was once known as University College Liverpool. It held its first classes in the year subsequent to its founding and was eventually annexed by Victoria University. By 1903, it was granted the right to award degrees as an independent university.
As of 2020, Liverpool is the educational home to over 22,000 undergraduates and around 7,000 postgraduate students, approximately 7,000 of whom are members of the international community. Meanwhile, its digital programs host over 10,000 learners from more than 160 countries. The institution has also granted hundreds of yearly scholarships.
Liverpool is affiliated with Nobel laureates and has produced a significant number of chief executives of large multinational enterprises. The school’s notable alumni include Barham Salih (Iraqi president), Clive Barker (author), Carol Anne Duffy (poet), Jon Snow (news broadcaster), Sanjay Jha (Motorola CEO), and Wade Barrett (professional wrestler).
