Data Sources and Methodology for the 4th Edition of Research.com Best Environmental Sciences Universities in United Kingdom Ranking
The 4th edition of the Research.com Best Environmental Sciences Universities in the United Kingdom Ranking has been developed using a robust data-driven approach, utilizing primarily OpenAlex, CrossRef, and several additional bibliometric data sources. The collection of bibliometric data that formed the foundation for devising our citation-based metrics was completed on 2024-11-27. The ranking position of each institution is determined by aggregating the D-indexes (Discipline H-index) of all recognized scholars affiliated with that institution whose principal publication area is Environmental Sciences. It is important to note that the D-index is an exclusive metric which only considers publication and citation data directly related to Environmental Sciences, providing a more discipline-focused assessment of academic impact.
Scope of Research and Inclusion Criteria
Our comprehensive analysis encompassed 279,971 scientist profiles identified from a diverse suite of bibliometric data sources. Specifically within Environmental Sciences, 17,263 scientists were rigorously evaluated for inclusion. To ensure a high threshold of scholarly excellence, each scientist was required to have a minimum D-index of 30, and the majority of their most significant publications needed to fall within the field of Environmental Sciences. Additional factors such as scientists' awards and field-specific achievements were also considered. The D-index threshold for consideration among top researchers was adapted as an increment of 10, contingent on the total number of scholars within each discipline, while ensuring the top 1% of field leaders were represented. Each scientist’s general H-index could exceed their D-index by no more than 30%, thereby affirming the proximity of their overall research output to Environmental Sciences. Awards and notable achievements served as supplementary qualifying factors for recognition in the ranking.
Verification and Evaluation Practices
Recognizing that raw quantitative data alone cannot capture the full scope of a researcher's contribution, our team subjected all scientist profiles to manual verification and cross-referenced them against publications disseminated in a wide array of reputable sources. While the sheer number of articles published in prominent journals and conference proceedings does not directly influence placement in this ranking, it does provide valuable secondary insight into a scholar’s contribution to their research community.
Researcher positions within the ranking are established primarily using H-index values, as aggregated from OpenAlex and CrossRef, the preeminent bibliometric databases available to the global academic community. These practices reflect our commitment to methodological rigor and the nuanced interpretation of scholarly output. More comprehensive details about our analytical process can be found on our methodology page.
