Data Sources and Citation Metrics
The 5th edition of the Research.com Best Social Sciences and Humanities Scientists in France Ranking was developed through comprehensive data collection from multiple reliable bibliometric databases, primarily OpenAlex and CrossRef, supplemented by various other authoritative data sources. The bibliometric data utilized to devise citation-based metrics for this ranking were collected on January 12, 2026, ensuring up-to-date and accurate representation of scientific contributions.
A scientist’s position in the ranking is determined using their D-index (Discipline H-index), which specifically measures scholarly impact within the examined discipline. The D-index exclusively includes papers and their citation metrics relevant to the Social Sciences and Humanities, thereby providing a discipline-focused assessment of research influence.
Scope of Research and Inclusion Criteria
The ranking framework analyzed 279,971 scientist profiles aggregated from a variety of bibliometric data sources across all academic disciplines. From this extensive dataset, 79 scientists specializing in Social Sciences and Humanities were identified for inclusion.
To qualify for the ranking, each scientist was required to have a D-index of at least 30 and a majority of their tier publications had to be directly situated in the area of Social Sciences and Humanities. Additionally, awards and achievements within the field were considered to further validate a researcher’s standing.
The D-index threshold was calibrated in increments of 10 based on the estimated total number of scholars per discipline, while ensuring that the top 1% of leading researchers in Social Sciences and Humanities are incorporated into the list. A further criterion required that each scientist’s general H-index and D-index differ by no more than 30%, maintaining proximity between their overall and discipline-specific impact metrics.
Verification and Validation Practices
Recognizing that raw bibliometric data cannot serve as an absolute measure of scholarly output, the Research.com team conducted thorough manual verification of all scientist profiles. Each profile was cross-correlated against publications verified in a broad spectrum of trustworthy sources to enhance accuracy and reliability.
While the number of papers published in prominent journals and conference proceedings does not directly influence a researcher’s rank, it serves as a valuable secondary indicator of a scientist’s contribution within their specific scientific area.
The ranking itself is anchored on each researcher’s D-index, derived from data curated by OpenAlex and CrossRef—two of the most prominent bibliometric databases accessible to the global research community.
