A scientist’s position in the ranking is determined by their D-index (Discipline H-index), a refined bibliometric indicator that considers only publications and citations relevant to the specific discipline under examination. This approach allows for a focused evaluation of researchers’ impact within their field of Social Sciences and Humanities, distinct from their overall academic influence.
Scope of Research and Inclusion Criteria
The ranking assesses a total of 279,971 scientist profiles identified from diverse bibliometric databases covering all academic disciplines. Specifically, within the Social Sciences and Humanities domain, 39 scientists were thoroughly examined. To qualify for inclusion in the ranking, candidates were required to have a D-index of at least 30, representing a significant scholarly impact within the domain. Additionally, the majority of their tier publications had to be concentrated in Social Sciences and Humanities, ensuring disciplinary relevance.
Beyond bibliometric thresholds, scientists’ awards and notable achievements within the Social Sciences and Humanities were also carefully considered to capture the breadth and quality of their contributions. The D-index thresholds for recognizing top researchers are calibrated in increments of 10 according to the total estimated population of scholars in each discipline. This adaptive thresholding guarantees the inclusion of the top 1% of leading scholars. Furthermore, eligible candidates typically exhibit a proximity of 30% or less between their overall H-index and discipline-specific D-index, indicating a strong disciplinary focus in their research outputs.
Verification Practices and Ranking Methodology
Recognizing the limitations of raw bibliometric data as an absolute measure of scholarly output, our research team employs rigorous verification practices. All scientist profiles included in the ranking undergo manual validation and are cross-correlated with publications across an extensive range of trusted academic databases and sources. While the number of publications in prominent journals and key conference proceedings is not a direct factor influencing a researcher’s ranking position, it serves as a valuable secondary indicator of their contribution and visibility within the Social Sciences and Humanities.
The positioning of researchers within the ranking is fundamentally determined by their D-index, computed from authoritative information gathered via OpenAlex and CrossRef — the most prominent and widely recognized bibliometric databases accessible to the global research community.
