A scientist’s position in the ranking is determined by their D-index (Discipline H-index), a refined variant of the traditional H-index that selectively includes papers and citation metrics exclusively within the examined discipline—in this case, Psychology. By focusing on discipline-specific output, the D-index provides a more accurate and relevant measure of a researcher’s scientific impact within their specialized field.
Scope and Criteria of the Ranking
For this edition, a total of 279,971 scientist profiles identified from a variety of bibliometric data sources across all disciplines were evaluated. Within the discipline of Psychology specifically, 10 scientists were shortlisted based on rigorous filtering criteria. To qualify for inclusion in the ranking, a researcher’s D-index needed to be at least 30, and a majority of their tier publications had to be in the area of Psychology. Additionally, scientists’ awards and notable achievements in the field of Psychology were considered in the evaluation process to complement bibliometric measures.
The threshold of the D-index for considering top researchers is established in increments of 10 relative to the estimated total number of scholars per discipline. This approach is designed to guarantee that the top 1% of leading scholars are incorporated into the ranking list. Another qualifying condition is that the proximity between a scientist’s general H-index and their Psychology-specific D-index should be 30% or less, ensuring that their broader scholarly impact aligns closely with their specialization.
Verification and Validation Practices
The Research.com team recognizes that raw bibliometric data alone cannot serve as an absolute tool for assessing the scholarly output of researchers. Therefore, all scientist profiles were also manually verified and cross-correlated against publications indexed in a wide range of reputable sources. This rigorous quality control ensures the integrity and accuracy of the ranking beyond automated data collection.
While the number of papers published in prominent journals and conference proceedings does not directly influence a researcher’s position in the ranking, it constitutes a valuable secondary signal of their contributions within the field of Psychology. The final position in the ranking is derived strictly using the D-index, as calculated from data gathered from OpenAlex and CrossRef.
