A scientist’s position within the ranking is determined using the D-index (Discipline H-index), a metric that focuses exclusively on papers and citations relevant to the specific discipline of Molecular Biology. This targeted approach ensures that the evaluation reflects contributions within the examined field rather than generalized research activity across disciplines.
Scope of Research and Ranking Criteria
The ranking methodology involved the examination of 187,969 scientist profiles drawn from a broad variety of bibliometric data sources, covering all scientific disciplines. From this extensive dataset, 5 scientists specializing specifically in Molecular Biology in Hungary were identified and thoroughly evaluated.
To qualify for inclusion in the ranking, a researcher’s D-index had to meet a minimum threshold of 40. Additionally, a majority of their tier publications were required to be clearly within the domain of Molecular Biology. Awards and achievements specifically related to the field were also considered as supplementary evidence confirming their expertise and impact.
Importantly, the D-index threshold is dynamically adjusted in increments of 10 according to the estimated total number of scholars in each discipline. This calibration guarantees that the top 1% of leading researchers are consistently incorporated into the ranking. Another critical criterion is that the proximity between a scientist’s general H-index and their D-index must not exceed 30%, ensuring a strong disciplinary focus and preventing inflated rankings based on cross-disciplinary citation activity.
Verification Practices and Data Integrity
We recognize that raw bibliometric data, while invaluable, are not definitive indicators of scientific quality or impact. To address this, all scientist profiles included in the ranking underwent rigorous manual verification. This process involved cross-correlating individual publication records against a broad spectrum of trustworthy sources to validate authorship accuracy and contextual relevance to Molecular Biology.
While the number of papers published in prestigious journals and conference proceedings does not directly influence a researcher’s ranking position, it serves as a valuable secondary indicator of their scholarly contribution within the scientific community.
The final position of each scientist is established solely by their D-index, calculated from data sourced predominantly from OpenAlex and CrossRef—recognized as the most comprehensive and reliable bibliometric databases accessible to the research community.
