A scientist’s position within the ranking is determined by their D-index (Discipline H-index), a metric that exclusively considers publications and citation metrics within the examined discipline—in this case, Medicine. This approach ensures that the ranking reflects expertise and impact specifically relevant to the field.
Scope of Research and Qualification Criteria
Our analysis examined a total of 188,153 scientist profiles compiled from a wide variety of bibliometric data sources spanning all disciplines. Within this comprehensive dataset, we identified 7,000 scientists specializing in Medicine. To qualify for inclusion in the ranking, a researcher’s D-index had to meet a minimum threshold of 70, with the majority of their top-tier publications concentrated in the field of Medicine.
Additionally, a scientist’s awards and achievements pertinent to Medicine were factored into the assessment. The minimum D-index threshold for consideration varies in increments of 10 depending on the total number of scholars estimated within each discipline. This adaptive threshold ensures the incorporation of the top 1% of leading experts while preserving a stringent standard.
To further validate disciplinary relevance, we required a proximity of 30% or less between the scientist’s general H-index and their D-index, establishing a strong correlation between overall impact and focused excellence within Medicine.
Verification Practices and Methodological Rigor
Recognizing that raw bibliometric data alone can never serve as an absolute measure of scholarly output, the Research.com team conducted an extensive manual verification of all scientist profiles included in the ranking. Profiles were cross-correlated against publications indexed in a wide range of trustworthy sources for enhanced reliability and accuracy.
While not directly contributing to the ranking position, the number of publications in prominent journals and high-impact conference proceedings is also considered a meaningful secondary signal of a researcher’s contribution to their specific area of science.
Ranking positions are ultimately established using each researcher’s D-index, calculated based on data harvested from OpenAlex and CrossRef. These databases represent the gold standard of bibliometric resources, ensuring transparency and repeatability of the ranking process.
