The bibliometric data used to calculate the citation-based metrics for this ranking were collected on January 12, 2026. A scientist’s position in the ranking is determined by their D-index (Discipline H-index), a specialized metric that considers only papers and citation counts within the specific discipline of Law. This focused approach allows for a precise assessment of scholarly influence relevant to the field under review.
Scope of Research and Inclusion Criteria
A total of 279,971 scientist profiles drawn from a variety of bibliometric sources across all disciplines were examined for this edition, out of which 1,000 scientists were identified specifically in the discipline of Law. To qualify for inclusion in the ranking, candidates were required to have a minimum D-index of 20, with the majority of their top-tier publications firmly situated within the area of Law.
In addition to bibliometric performance, significant awards and achievements within the legal academic community were also considered to provide a holistic view of each scientist’s contributions. The threshold for the D-index is adjusted in increments of 10 depending on the estimated total number of scholars in each discipline, ensuring that the ranking consistently incorporates the top 1% of leading researchers.
Moreover, to ensure disciplinary focus, a scientist’s D-index and overall H-index must exhibit a proximity of 30% or less, indicating that their scholarly output is predominantly within the examined field.
Additional Verification Practices
Recognizing that raw bibliometric data alone cannot fully capture the nuance and quality of scholarly output, the Research.com team implements rigorous manual verification. Each scientist’s profile is meticulously cross-correlated against publications listed in a wide spectrum of trustworthy academic sources.
While the number of papers published in leading journals and prestigious conference proceedings does not directly influence a researcher’s ranking position, it is acknowledged as an important secondary indicator of meaningful scientific contribution within a specific discipline.
The principal ranking metric—the D-index—is derived from data aggregated by OpenAlex and CrossRef. These platforms represent the most current, prominent, and widely respected bibliometric resources available to the global research community.
