Overview

The University of Central Florida (UCF) is a distinguished public research university situated 13 miles east of downtown Orlando, Florida. Founded on June 10, 1963, UCF provides exceptional academic experience through a combination of vibrant student life, cutting-edge research opportunities, and world-class faculty.

The university’s journey to becoming the largest university (by enrollment) in Florida started in January 1967 with the construction of the main campus in Orlando. By the following year, the institution opened its doors as Florida Technological University. It enrolled 1,948 students with a goal to give them hands-on experience and provide talent to Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, the burgeoning U.S Space Program at the Kennedy Space Center, and the Florida community in general.

UCF’s 1,415-acre main campus provides modern facilities and leverages state-of-the-art technology to keep students connected. The university has other campuses, including Lake Nona’s Medical City (Academic Health Science Campus), UCF Downtown, and the Rosen College of Hospitality Management. In addition, UCF has multiple Connect locations spread all over Central Florida.

The institution has kept its promise to attract and cultivate diverse and exceptional students, faculty, and staff. Today, UCF has over 69,000 students, more than 300,000 alumni, and more than 13,600 employees, 9,662 of which are full-time. In particular, the institution excels in fields, such as hospitality management, education, business, computer science, public administration, video game design, and healthcare.

Boasting 13 colleges, UCF gives students limitless opportunities to pursue the careers of their dreams. The colleges offer over 220 degree programs, including 99 bachelor’s programs, 89 masters programs, 31 research doctorates, three professional doctorates, and three specialist programs.

The University of Central Florida provides modern facilities designed to support students’ academic and social life on campus. Its on-campus and affiliated housing facilities have the capacity to accommodate up to 12,922 students. Besides, the main campus library (the John C. Hitt library) occupies 226,000 gross square feet and has a collection of more than 1.8 million print volumes.

In terms of extracurricular activities, UCF’s Knights are one of the most successful athletic teams in the U.S. The Knights compete in the National Collegiate Athletic Association division one. As of 2019, the team had amassed 259 victories, six conference titles, and six division titles.
