Data Sources and Methodology for the 4th Edition of the Research.com Best Medicine Universities in Belgium Ranking
The 4th edition of the Research.com Best Medicine Universities in Belgium Ranking is grounded in a robust data-driven approach, combining bibliometric data from foremost sources such as OpenAlex and CrossRef, in addition to a range of supplementary trusted data repositories. Bibliometric data enabling citation-based metrics for the ranking were collected on 2024-11-27. The ranking's core metric is the sum of D-indexes (Discipline H-index) of all affiliated scholars at each institution whose principal research area is Medicine. The D-index rigorously accounts only for discipline-specific publications and citations, ensuring a precise assessment of scholarly output within Medicine.
Scope of Research and Evaluation Criteria
The extent of analysis for this ranking was comprehensive, involving the evaluation of 279,971 scientist profiles sourced from diverse bibliometric databases. From this corpus, 72,221 scientists working specifically in Medicine were analyzed. To assure selectivity and field relevance, a qualifying D-index threshold of 70 was set for each examined scientist, with most of their high-tier publications required to be in the domain of Medicine. Further, notable awards and achievements in Medicine were factored into the scientist evaluation.
The methodology utilizes an incrementally adjusted D-index threshold, raised by ten points depending on the estimated number of scholars per discipline, to guarantee that the top 1% of leading Medicine scholars are incorporated in the final list. In order to uphold the discipline focus, a proximity criterion of 30% or less was mandated between a scientist's overall H-index and their D-index in Medicine. Awards and significant milestones in their field were also considered as part of the eligibility and evaluation process.
Verification Practices and Data Integrity
Acknowledging that bibliometric indicators alone may not entirely reflect a researcher's impact, Research.com incorporated extensive manual verification. All profiles underwent cross-comparison against publications listed in a broad spectrum of reputable sources, validating both accuracy and relevance. While the volume of papers in leading journals and proceedings is not a direct factor affecting rank positions, it remains a valuable supplementary signal of a scientist’s contribution to advancing medical science.
Institutional ranking is based on aggregated H-index values for each researcher, as drawn from up-to-date records in OpenAlex and CrossRef — the largest and most recognized bibliometric databases available to the research community. We invite readers interested in the full methodology to review details on our methodology page.
