Data Sources and Metrics
The 5th edition of the Research.com Best Political Science Scientists in Korea Ranking is grounded in comprehensive bibliometric data primarily sourced from OpenAlex and CrossRef, supplemented by multiple additional reputable data repositories. The citation-based metrics that underpin the ranking were meticulously collected on January 12, 2026. Central to the ranking methodology is the D-index (Discipline H-index), a refined metric that evaluates a researcher’s impact exclusively within the scope of their examined discipline. This ensures that the ranking reflects a scientist’s specific contributions to Political Science rather than their broader academic influence.
Scope of Research and Qualification Criteria
The ranking synthesis began with the examination of 279,971 scientist profiles drawn from an extensive array of bibliometric sources, encompassing all academic disciplines. Within the Political Science discipline, 2,000 scientist profiles were closely analyzed. To qualify for inclusion, a scientist’s D-index in Political Science needed to be at least 20, with the majority of their tier publications residing within the field. In addition to bibliometric output, recognized awards and tangible achievements in Political Science were factored into the assessment.
The D-index threshold is calibrated in increments of 10 relative to the estimated size of the scholar population within each discipline. This approach guarantees that the ranking captures the top 1% of leading experts while maintaining discipline-specific rigor. Furthermore, a proximity of 30% or less between a researcher’s overall H-index and their D-index is required to ensure that their disciplinary focus is substantive and representative of their expertise.
Verification and Validation Practices
Understanding the limitations of raw bibliometric data as a comprehensive evaluative tool, the research team conducted rigorous manual verification of all scientist profiles included in the ranking. Profiles were cross-correlated against publications indexed in a wide spectrum of authoritative and trustworthy sources to confirm accuracy and discipline relevance.
While the number of publications in prominent journals and conference proceedings does not directly influence a researcher’s position in the ranking, this metric serves as an important secondary indicator of a scientist’s contribution to Political Science. The ranking itself is determined solely by the D-index derived from data aggregated from OpenAlex and CrossRef — currently the most prominent and widely recognized bibliometric databases accessible to the academic community.
