Data Sources and Bibliometric Collection
The 5th edition of the Research.com Best Molecular Biology Scientists in Brazil Ranking has been developed using a comprehensive set of bibliometric data primarily sourced from OpenAlex and CrossRef, supplemented by multiple other trusted data repositories. These databases are among the most prominent and well-regarded sources in the research community, providing extensive coverage of scholarly publications and citation metrics. The bibliometric data used to calculate the citation-based metrics for this ranking were collected on January 12, 2026. The position of each scientist in the ranking is determined by their D-index (Discipline H-index), a refined metric which only accounts for papers and citations directly relevant to the examined discipline—in this case, Molecular Biology—thereby providing a focused and discipline-specific evaluation of research impact.
Scope of Research and Inclusion Criteria
The ranking is based on an exhaustive examination of 187,969 scientist profiles drawn from a diverse range of bibliometric data sources across all scientific disciplines. From this extensive pool, 10 scientists specialized in Molecular Biology were identified and evaluated. To qualify for inclusion in the ranking, a scientist’s D-index in Molecular Biology needed to be at least 40, ensuring that only highly impactful researchers were considered. Additionally, a majority of the publications that contribute to the D-index had to be within the Molecular Biology discipline. Beyond bibliometric thresholds, scholars' awards and achievements in Molecular Biology were also factored into the selection process to provide a holistic assessment of their research excellence.
The D-index threshold is adaptively set in increments of 10 depending on the estimated number of scholars in each discipline, with the objective of incorporating the top 1% of leading researchers into the ranking. This dynamic setting ensures discipline-specific rigor while maintaining comparability across fields. Furthermore, to guarantee alignment between general and discipline-specific research impact, candidates selected for the list must exhibit a proximity of 30% or less between their overall H-index and their Molecular Biology-specific D-index.
Verification and Validation Practices
Understanding the inherent limitations of relying solely on raw bibliometric data, the research team behind this ranking conducted meticulous manual verification of all scientist profiles. This included cross-correlating author records against publications indexed in a wide spectrum of authoritative and trustworthy sources. Although the number of papers published in prestigious journals and conference proceedings is not a direct factor that determines a researcher’s rank, it serves as a valuable secondary indicator of a scientist’s contribution to Molecular Biology. This careful validation ensures the credibility and reliability of the ranking.
The core metric, the D-index, was computed exclusively from data provided by OpenAlex and CrossRef, the leading bibliometric databases utilized globally by the research community.
