Data Sources and Methodology
The 5th edition of the Research.com Best Economics and Finance Scientists in Canada Ranking is primarily based on bibliometric data aggregated from OpenAlex and CrossRef, supplemented by multiple other trusted sources. These comprehensive databases provide extensive coverage of scholarly publications, citations, and related metadata, enabling a detailed and robust evaluation of scientific output. The citation-based metrics underlying the ranking were collected on January 12, 2026, ensuring an up-to-date and accurate reflection of current research impact.
A researcher’s position in the ranking is determined by their D-index (Discipline H-index), a specialized metric that isolates a scientist’s publications and citations strictly within the discipline of Economics and Finance. This focus ensures that the evaluation specifically reflects a researcher’s impact in the relevant field rather than across all disciplines.
Scope of Research and Eligibility Criteria
For this ranking, 279,971 scientist profiles spanning all disciplines were initially examined, with a focused analysis of 99 scientists specializing in Economics and Finance in Canada. Qualification for inclusion required a minimum D-index of 30, coupled with a majority of tier publications concentrated in the Economics and Finance domain. Additionally, consideration was given to notable awards and achievements within the discipline, reinforcing the recognition of genuine scholarly excellence.
The threshold D-index for inclusion is set dynamically with increments of 10, calibrated to reflect the size of the scholarly population within each discipline. This approach guarantees representation of approximately the top 1% of leading scholars in the field. Furthermore, to ensure consistency and disciplinary relevance, a proximity criterion was applied such that the difference between a scientist’s general H-index and their D-index does not exceed 30%.
Verification Practices and Ranking Integrity
Recognizing that raw bibliometric data alone cannot provide a definitive evaluation of scientific contributions, the researchers behind this ranking undertook rigorous manual verification of all scientist profiles. Cross-correlation was performed against a broad spectrum of trusted publication sources to validate the accuracy and completeness of profiles.
While the number of papers published in prominent journals and conference proceedings does not directly influence ranking position, it is regarded as a valuable secondary indicator of a scientist’s impact within Economics and Finance. The ranking itself is established solely on the basis of the D-index derived from verified data sourced from OpenAlex and CrossRef, two of the most prominent and trusted bibliometric platforms accessible to the research community.
