Overview: University of the Fraser Valley
The University of the Fraser Valley (UFV), established in 1974, is a public, teaching-focused institution located in Abbotsford, British Columbia, Canada. Originally founded as Fraser Valley College, UFV has since expanded into a multi-campus university serving the lower Fraser Valley region. With more than 15,000 students enrolled annually, UFV operates five campuses across Abbotsford, Chilliwack, Mission, Hope, and Chandigarh (India), and offers over 100 programs. Its scale and reach make it a prominent hub for higher education in western Canada.
Academic Strengths and Structure
UFV is renowned for its applied and professional programs, with particular strengths in business administration, computer information systems, health sciences, agriculture, and trades–including one of Canada’s largest aviation training programs. The university is characterized by a student-centered educational philosophy, blending hands-on experiential learning, small class sizes, and close faculty mentorship. Interdisciplinary learning is emphasized through flexible degree pathways, co-operative education, and strong ties with local industries. UFV is building its research profile, contributing to regional inquiry especially in agriculture, Indigenous studies, and criminology. Despite its primary teaching mission, UFV collaborates nationally and internationally, recently joining the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities and expanding global partnerships for student mobility and research projects.
Student Life and Community
UFV offers a vibrant campus environment, featuring over 60 student clubs and organizations, frequent arts and cultural events, leadership development, and robust support services focused on mental health, accessibility, and academic success. The university celebrates diversity and inclusivity, actively recruiting international students who currently represent more than 10% of its population, and provides orientation, peer mentoring, and intercultural programming. Students have access to on-campus housing in Abbotsford, fitness and recreation facilities, varsity athletics, and opportunities to engage in community service and cooperative education placements that foster local and global citizenship.
Mission, Vision, and Values
UFV is committed to inspiring learners, transforming lives, and building community through inclusive, applied, and innovative education. The institution’s vision emphasizes social responsibility, sustainability, and the cultivation of lifelong learning and global perspectives.
