Data Sources and Ranking Metrics
The 5th edition of the Research.com Best Ecology and Evolution Scientists in Sri Lanka Ranking is primarily founded on comprehensive bibliometric data sourced from OpenAlex and CrossRef, supplemented by multiple other reputable data repositories. The citation-based metrics that underpin the ranking were systematically collected on January 12, 2026. A scientist’s position within the ranking is determined by their D-index (Discipline H-index), a refined metric that exclusively accounts for publications and citation data relevant to the examined discipline—in this case, Ecology and Evolution. This discipline-specific approach ensures that the ranking reflects scholarly impact within the targeted field rather than general academic output.
Scope of Research and Qualification Criteria
In the development of this ranking, 279,971 scientist profiles spanning a broad range of disciplines were analyzed, including a focused examination of 2,000 scientists specializing in Ecology and Evolution. To qualify for inclusion, researchers were required to meet a minimum D-index threshold of 30, alongside a demonstrated publication record where the majority of tier publications were within the Ecology and Evolution domain. Additional consideration was given to scientists’ awards and recognized achievements specific to this field. The D-index threshold is calibrated in increments of 10, reflective of the estimated total number of scholars within each discipline. This methodology ensures the inclusion of the top 1% of leading experts, maintaining a high standard of scholarly excellence. Furthermore, to guarantee relevance to the discipline, candidates’ general H-index and their D-index must differ by no more than 30%.
Verification Practices and Methodology Transparency
The Research.com team acknowledges that raw bibliometric data alone cannot definitively evaluate the full scope of a scholar’s research contribution. Consequently, all scientist profiles were subjected to meticulous manual verification and cross-referenced against a wide array of trusted academic sources. While the number of papers published in prominent journals and high-profile conference proceedings does not directly influence a researcher’s rank, it serves as a valuable secondary indicator of their scientific contribution. The final ranking positions are established using each researcher’s D-index computed from the curated data obtained from OpenAlex and CrossRef—two of the most prominent and rigorously maintained bibliometric databases available to the scientific community.
