National Tsing Hua University (NTHU) is a public research university located in Hsinchu City, Taiwan. The university is known as one of the most prestigious schools in Taiwan and in East Asia.
NTHU currently offers a diverse range of programs in fields such as engineering, computer science, humanities, and technology management. The university also has a number of interdisciplinary programs at the undergraduate, master's, and doctoral level in various fields of study, including nuclear science and life science. Most courses at the NTHU are taught in Mandarin, but international students can enroll in a variety of English-taught courses. In addition to on-campus programs, the university provides online learning opportunities through its eLearning system and MOOCs, which include courses in financial management, econometrics, neuroscience, and environmental sustainability.
NTHU indicates that it is the successor to the original Tsinghua College, a school established in Beijing in 1911 to educate students the Taiwan government planned to send to the United States. The university assumed its current name of National Tsing Hua University in 1928, and it was re-established in Hsinchu City when the Chinese Civil War ended in 1956.
In recent years, NTHU has established deep ties with China's Tsinghua University. Together, the universities have established the Tsinghua Strait Research Institute along with various double-degree programs, academic exchange programs, and MOOCs. NTHU also participates in Academia Sinica's Taiwan International Graduate Program.
Since its reinstallation, the university has continued to expand its academic and research expertise. Alumni of the university have gone on to receive Nobel Prizes in physics and chemistry as well as the Wolf Prize in mathematics. The university's College of Nuclear Science is also the only Taiwanese educational and research institution to study the applications of nuclear power. The university is also home to numerous research centers and laboratories exploring fields such as memory and development, fundamental and applied sciences of matter, quantum technology, and clean energy.
In 1998, NTHU established its Innovation Incubation Center, which is dedicated to promoting entrepreneurship among NTHU students and staff. Through the center, the university works with key industry partners to support research and innovation on campus.
In addition to these research activities, the university provides a wide variety of services to students, including on-campus housing and fellowships. Scholarships and financial aid are also available to students.
Students at the university can also participate at the annual Mei-Chu Tournament versus the National Chiao Tung University, another university in Hsinchu City, Taiwan. Since the first tournament in 1969, this sporting event has become a tradition at NTHU.
