Overview

The University of Western Ontario, internationally known as Western University, is one of Canada’s leading publicly-funded research-intensive universities. It is also one of the top 1% of universities globally. Recognized for its outstanding academic programs, exceptional research activities and discoveries, and world-class student experience, the university offers almost 500 undergraduate and graduate degree programs across a wide range of disciplines.

The university is composed of 12 schools and faculties: Arts and Humanities, Business, Engineering, Life Science, Social Science, Health Science, Medicine and Dentistry, Education, Music, Media, Information, and Law. As one of the country’s leading research universities, Western has had discoveries that contributed to social, cultural, health, and economic growth not just in Canada but in other countries as well.

Founded on March 7, 1878 by the Anglican Bishop Isaac Helmuth, Western University was first named The Western University of London, Ontario. Huron College, which was established in 1863, served as its founding institution. Western started with four faculties: Law, Medicine, Arts, and Divinity. Although founded in 1878, it only garnered the authority to confer degrees in Medicine, Divinity, and Art in 1881.

In 1908, the university became non-denominational and in 1923, it adopted the name The University of Western Ontario. About a century later, the institution was rebranded to Western University to give it an international identity as opposed to a regional or national one. However, the legal name The University of Western Ontario remains in use for official documents such as diplomas and transcripts.

Western University is home to some of the world’s most renowned research centers, including the Wind Engineering, Energy and Environment (WindEEE) Research Institute, the Rotman Institute of Philosophy, the Robarts Research Institute, the Brain and Mind Institute, the Bone and Joint Institute, and the Fraunhofer Project Centre for Composites Research.

Besides its research centers, the university also takes pride in its library system, the Western Libraries. Currently, the institution operates six libraries that collectively contain about 2.5 million books and electronic resources. The university also operates the Artlab Gallery, which is known for showcasing around 15 projects annually, and the McIntosh Gallery, which has been serving as a public art gallery since 1942.

Western University has produced a number of notable graduates, including Roberta Bondar, CSA, the first Canadian female in space; Sir Frederick Banting, who received the Nobel Prize for his discovery of insulin; and Margaret Chan, the 7th Director-General of the World Health Organization.
