The University of Extremadura (UEx), also known as Universidad de Extremadura in Spanish, is a public university nestled in the south-western region of Spain. Home to around 30,000 undergraduate and graduate students as well as about 1,500 academic personnel, the university is part of the prestigious Group G9 of Universities. As such, it works closely with other well-known institutions of higher education, such as the Universities of Castilla-La Mancha, Cantabria, La Rioja, Balearic Islands, Oviedo, Navarra, Zaragoza, and Basque Country.

Established in 1973, the university was founded by way of a decree initiated by Spain’s Ministry of Education and Science. Currently, it has four campuses in the provinces of Badajoz (in the cities of Badajoz and Mérida) and Cáceres (in the cities of Cáceres and Plasencia). To date, the university offers 64 bachelor’s degree programs and 32 master’s degree programs that focus on a wide range of disciplines.

Each of the campuses of UEx has its own specialty. The Badajoz Campus is home to five faculties: (1) Faculty of Science, (2) Faculty of Medicine, (3) Faculty of Economics Sciences, (4) Faculty of Education, and (5) School of Industrial Engineering.

Meanwhile, the Cáceres Campus hosts eight faculties: (1) Faculty of Law, (2) Faculty of Technology, (3) Faculty of Veterinary, (4) Faculty of Teacher Training, (5) Faculty of Sport Science, (6) Faculty of Business and Tourism, (7) Faculty of Nursing and Occupational Therapy, and (8) Faculty of Philosophy and Letters.

In addition to the abovementioned, UEx’s Mérida Campus offers five out of the 64 bachelor’s degrees at the institution: Nursing, Telecommunication Engineering, Information Technologies, Industrial Design Engineering, and Geomatics and Topography. On the other hand, the Plasencia Campus offers degrees in Podiatry, Forestry Engineering, and Administration and Business Management.

Aside from its physical campuses, UEx also manages an online campus known as the Virtual Campus of the University of Extremadura (CVUE). This was established to complement the classroom-based education that students receive. Based on modern concepts of technologies, communication, and information, the virtual campus aids teachers, students, and school administrators in extending the accessibility of tools and resources that enhance the overall learning process and experience. CVUE also aims to help promote better collaboration between students and educators.

More than providing quality academic courses and programs, UEx also offers and organizes cultural courses and activities in different disciplines and specialties to provide a balanced campus life to its students. These include theater, dance, choreography, photography, and debate. Students can join or attend courses at discounted rates. To help international students further, the university also has a Spanish-as-a-foreign-language center that offers certificate programs for non-native Spanish speakers.
