Overview

The Missouri University of Science and Technology, Missouri S&T for short, is a distinguished public institution located in Rolla, Missouri. Since its establishment in 1870, the university has strived to build a heritage of creativity, discovery, and innovation to impart knowledge and inspire students to unravel tomorrow's challenges. The institution is also part of the University of Missouri System.

Its journey to becoming one of the best engineering colleges in the US began in 1862, following the Morrill Act, which allowed for the use of federal land proceeds to help build higher learning institutions in the U.S. Eight years later, the university was established as Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy (MSM), becoming the first technological college west of Mississippi, and among the first in the country. By 1964, it changed its name to University of Missouri at Rolla before finally adopting its current name in January 2008.

The institution's early programs focused on the mining industry, and its most-pressing technological needs. In the 1920s, however, the university expanded its courses of study to include Engineering (civil, electrical, chemical, and mechanical), Mathematics, Metallurgy, and Chemistry. At present, Missouri S&T offers 99-degree programs in 40 study areas including Engineering, Computer Science, Liberal Arts, Business, and Humanities.

The university is organized around two colleges; the College of Arts, Sciences, and Business; and the College of Engineering and Computing. The university has a total of more than 450 faculty members including more than 350 full-time and over 90 part-time members. Meanwhile, the university is currently home to more than 7,600 students. By fall 2019, Missouri University of Science and Technology had a student-faculty ratio of 18:1.

In keeping with its bid to inspire creativity and innovation, the university creates the perfect environment for students to thrive. The more than 19 design teams give students the chance to develop teamwork, problem-solving, and business skills. The teams are the propagation zones for unique ideas such as building solar house robots, racecars, rovers, and rockets.

Aside from its stellar academic programs, the Missouri S&T is also categorized as an R2: Doctoral University for its high research activity. The institution supports research in different areas such as advanced material for sustainable energy, infrastructure, and environment; advanced manufacturing; and material for extreme environment, and smart living. To this end, Missouri S&T is home to one of the most comprehensive geothermal systems in the U.S., which has reduced energy consumption by more than 50% campus-wide. Even better, the university is home to EcoVillage and Solar Village — two neighborhoods with student-designed solar houses that have become the benchmark for sustainable living across the globe.
