Today, it continues to be under the supervision of the Ministry of Defence of France even as it has since ceased to be a military school. Polytechnique belongs to the Grandes Écoles, an elite group of reputable French institutions of higher education.
The university is known for its technical and scientific academic programs, such as the prestigious Polytechnicien Engineer program (diplôme d'ingénieur degree). It sees around 2,900 students with 60% in the undergraduate level and the rest taking up graduate studies.
Considered one of the “best small universities,” École Polytechnique has placed decently in various rankings of the world’s top universities for both its teaching and research programs. Notably, students go through a multidisciplinary curriculum designed to broaden their knowledge. For instance, the university offers a three-year Bachelor in Science degree program that leads to a double major in either Mathematics and Economics, Mathematics and Computer Science, and Mathematics and Physics.
Likewise, Polytechnique offers graduate programs, such as Master in Engineering (Ingénieur Polytechnicien) and the Master of Science and Technology Programs. It also offers doctorate programs as well as Professional Programs (eLearning, Executive master, and Continuing education).
The university is also acknowledged for its international exchange programs. It was among the first French Grandes Écoles universities to open its doors to international students as early as 1798. It has continued this centuries-old tradition until today.
Polytechnique has numerous research centers, laboratories, and institutes for a wide range of technical and scientific fields, such as biology, chemistry, economics, computer science, mathematics, and physics. The university operates its research units in collaboration with national scientific agencies, such as the French National Centre for Scientific Research, the French Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission, and the National Institute for Research in Computer Science and Automation.
What’s more, the university has various incubator programs that support budding entrepreneurs, such as the Fab Lab, X-Tech Incubator, and X-UP Accelerator. It also offers financing schemes for start-ups and collaborates with other incubators.
