Brunel University London is a public research university in England. Established in 1966, it is often called a British plate glass university, which pertains to a group of universities in the United Kingdom founded or elevated to university status in the 1960s.

In 2011, Brunel received the prestigious Queen's Anniversary Prize. Moreover, it is currently ranked among the top 400 universities worldwide by both the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2021 and QS World University Rankings 2021. It is also a member of the Universities UK, the European University Association, and the Association of Commonwealth Universities.

This university is named after Isambard Kingdom Brunel, the Victorian engineer who led the construction of viaducts, bridges, and tunnels for the Great Western Railway, which connected London and Bristol. Originally called Brunel College of Advanced Technology, the institution became Brunel University after receiving a royal charter in June 1966. In August 2014, it was again renamed to become Brunel University London after it reorganized its structure to comprise three colleges and three main research institutes.

Brunel consists of three constituent academic colleges, namely the College of Health and Life Sciences, College of Business, Arts and Social Sciences, and College of Engineering, Design and Physical Sciences. Their education curriculum draws heavily on the teaching staff’s extensive expertise, which include areas such as Sports Medicine, Children's Education, Contemporary Music and Digital Performance, Materials Processing, Human-Centred Design, Environmental Science, and Cancer Genetics, among others.

Aside from focusing on academics, the university is also known for its research efforts. Students are granted access to specialist laboratories, including sports and performing arts facilities, an occupational therapy suite, motion-capture equipment, MRI scanner, 3D body scanner, train, driving, and flight simulators, and experimental, bioprocessing, and electronic imaging techniques. As such, a recent Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) found that 90% of Brunel research output was rated as having “international quality.” In the 2014 RAE, Brunel was 33rd in rank in terms of Research Power.

The Brunel campus, particularly its 'Brutalist' architectural style edifices, which was built in the 1960s, had played host to a number of famous films and British television series. Notable examples include Stanley Kubrick's A Clockwork Orange, Inspector Morse, The Sweeney, Silent Witness, and Spooks.

It also has a rich history in the popular British music scene. In the 1970s to the 1990s, the University’s Brunel Student Hall and The Sports Barn were favorite venues of concerts for some of the biggest bands, including The Sex Pistols, The Pretenders, Genesis, Fleetwood Mac, and The Who.

Today, Brunel students enjoy access to world-class educational, social, medical, and sports facilities, including a retail shop, a pharmacy, a cafe, and a night club, among others.
