Data Sources and Methodology of the Research.com Best Medicine Universities in Greece Ranking (4th Edition)
The 4th edition of the Research.com Best Medicine Universities in Greece Ranking is grounded in comprehensive analysis and robust bibliometric data collection, with major reliance on OpenAlex and CrossRef as primary information sources, complemented by multiple other data providers. The bibliometric data underpinning the citation-based metrics for this ranking were thoroughly collected as of 2024-11-27. A university’s position in the ranking is determined by aggregating the D-indexes (Discipline H-index) of all qualifying scholars primarily affiliated with Medicine at a given institution. The D-index is discipline-specific and exclusively reflects publications and citations within the area of Medicine, ensuring precise measurement of research excellence specific to the field.
Scope of Research and Qualification Criteria
The ranking’s scope is extensive, with 279,971 scientist profiles initially reviewed from a wide variety of bibliometric data sources. From these, 72,221 scientists specializing in Medicine were meticulously analyzed. Scientists considered for the ranking had to meet a stringent D-index threshold of 70, and a majority of their top-tier publications had to be in the area of Medicine. Recognition of a scientist’s leadership is further enhanced by factoring in major awards and achievements in Medicine.
To ensure the elite nature of the ranking, the D-index threshold for inclusion is modified in increments of 10, corresponding to the number of researchers active in each discipline, but always ensuring that at least the top 1% of scholars are represented. An additional requirement stipulates that the proximity between a scientist’s overall H-index and their D-index should not exceed 30%. This balances evaluation rigor with fairness, focusing assessment on true subject-matter experts whose contributions are overwhelmingly in Medicine. Awards and achievements in the relevant field of study are also incorporated as qualitative factors.
Verification and Quality Assurance Practices
The team behind the ranking recognizes that bibliometric data alone should never serve as the sole instrument for appraising scholarly performance. Consequently, all scientist profiles underwent manual verification and were cross-checked against a broad spectrum of trusted publication repositories. Although the quantity of papers published in recognized journals and conferences does not directly affect a researcher’s ranking, it serves as an insightful secondary indicator of their influence and contributions to the field.
The ranking’s positions are derived from each researcher’s H-index, strictly within the context of Medicine, using data as provided by OpenAlex and CrossRef—two of the foremost bibliometric databases in the academic world. These efforts underscore our unwavering commitment to transparency and precision in evaluating academic excellence.
