Data Sources and Citation-Based Metrics
The 4th edition of the Research.com Best Business and Management Universities in Switzerland Ranking is rooted in comprehensive and reliable data collection. The ranking primarily utilizes bibliometric data sourced from OpenAlex and CrossRef, supplemented with a variety of additional reputable data sources, to ensure robust and objective evaluation. Bibliometric data, forming the foundation for the citation-based metrics and analyses, was collected on 2024-11-27.
Each institution's position in the ranking is determined by the aggregate sum of D-indexes (Discipline H-index) of all qualifying scholars affiliated with the university, whose principal area of publication is in Business and Management. Importantly, the D-index is calculated solely with publications and citation data specific to the examined discipline, providing a precise measure of impact within Business and Management, independently from other scientific areas.
Scope of Research and Criteria
The process behind the ranking's construction is both extensive and specialized. A total of 279,971 scientist profiles were identified using various bibliometric data sources, from which 9,829 scientists working specifically in Business and Management were analyzed for inclusion.
Eligibility required each scientist to have a minimum D-index of 30, with the majority of their significant publications situated in the field of Business and Management. The ranking also considered a scientist’s notable awards and achievements within the discipline. The D-index threshold for recognizing top researchers increases in increments of 10, determined according to the estimated number of scholars in each discipline, and is structured to ensure that the top 1% of leading experts are represented. Additionally, there must be a proximity of 30% or less between a scholar’s general H-index and their D-index, ensuring disciplinary consistency and focus. Awards and career accomplishments were also incorporated as qualitative assessment factors.
Verification and Data Validation
The Research.com editorial team recognizes that quantitative data alone cannot capture the full scope of scientific contribution. To this end, all scientist profiles underwent manual verification and were carefully cross-checked against publications in a broad array of trustworthy sources. This meticulous approach guarantees the accuracy and integrity of the data, minimizing errors and potential biases.
While the number of papers published in leading journals and conference proceedings was not a criterion for determining a researcher’s ranking position, it is acknowledged as an important secondary indicator of scholarly contribution in Business and Management. Final ranking positions are established based on each researcher's H-index, calculated from comprehensive information provided by OpenAlex and CrossRef—two of the most reliable and widely recognized bibliometric databases in the field.
