The bibliometric data utilized in this ranking were collected on January 12, 2026. A scientist’s position in the ranking is determined based on their D-index (Discipline H-index), a refined metric that accounts exclusively for papers and citation metrics within the examined discipline of Microbiology. This ensures that the ranking reflects a researcher’s true impact and productivity in their specific field of expertise.
Scope of Research and Inclusion Criteria
To establish the ranking, a total of 187,659 scientist profiles identified across various bibliometric sources were examined spanning all disciplines. Within Microbiology specifically, 138 scientists were analyzed in detail.
In order to qualify for inclusion in the ranking, a scientist was required to have a D-index of at least 40, with the majority of their tier publications originating within the field of Microbiology. Additional consideration was given to their awards and achievements relating to Microbiology, reinforcing the rigor of the selection process.
The threshold for the D-index is set at increments of 10 depending on the estimated total number of scholars in each discipline. This adaptive approach guarantees inclusion of approximately the top 1% of leading researchers in the field. Additionally, to ensure relevance, there must be a proximity of 30% or less between a scientist’s general H-index and their discipline-specific D-index, reflecting focused expertise in Microbiology.
Verification and Quality Assurance
Recognizing that raw bibliometric data alone cannot fully capture the quality and impact of a researcher’s output, our team conducted thorough manual verification of all scientist profiles. This involved cross-correlating the bibliometric data against publications listed in a wide range of highly trusted academic sources.
While the number of published papers in prominent journals and conference proceedings is not directly factored into the ranking position, we acknowledge it as a valuable secondary indicator of a scientist’s contribution to the advancement of knowledge within Microbiology.
The final positioning in the ranking is established solely based on each researcher's D-index as derived from data collected from OpenAlex and CrossRef, two of the most well-regarded and widely used bibliometric databases accessible to the global research community.
