Data Sources and Bibliometric Information
The 5th edition of the Research.com Best Medicine Scientists in Russia Ranking was developed using a comprehensive aggregation of bibliometric data primarily sourced from OpenAlex and CrossRef, complemented by multiple other reputable data repositories. The bibliometric data underpinning the citation-based metrics employed in this ranking were meticulously collected on January 12, 2026. A scientist's position within the ranking is determined by the D-index (Discipline H-index), a refined metric that exclusively considers a researcher’s scholarly output and citation impact within the specific discipline under examination—Medicine in this instance. This approach ensures that the ranking accurately reflects discipline-specific research excellence.
Scope of Research and Criteria for Inclusion
The analysis conducted for this ranking encompassed 188,153 scientist profiles identified through an extensive review of multiple bibliometric data sources across all scientific disciplines. Out of these, 4,000 scientists specializing in Medicine were examined in detail. To qualify for inclusion in the ranking, a scientist was required to have a D-index of at least 70, and the majority of their tier publications needed to be within the field of Medicine. In addition to bibliometric criteria, awards and significant achievements specific to Medicine were also factored into the evaluation.
The threshold for the D-index is dynamically adjusted in increments of 10 based on the total number of scholars estimated within each discipline. This calibration ensures that the ranking faithfully captures the top 1% of leading researchers while maintaining stringent discipline-specific standards. Furthermore, a proximity rule requires that the difference between a scientist’s overall H-index and their Medicine-specific D-index does not exceed 30%, reinforcing the focus on genuine disciplinary expertise.
Verification and Quality Assurance
The research team behind the ranking recognizes that raw bibliometric data alone cannot serve as an absolute measure of scholarly output or impact. Accordingly, all scientist profiles included in the ranking underwent meticulous manual verification. This process involved cross-correlating publication records against a broad array of trustworthy academic sources to validate accuracy and relevance.
While the quantity of papers published in prominent journals and conference proceedings does not directly influence the ranking position, it serves as a valuable secondary indicator of a scientist’s meaningful contributions within their specific scientific domain.
The ranking position is based on the D-index derived from data compiled from OpenAlex and CrossRef, two of the most prominent and widely respected bibliometric databases available to the global research community.
