Data Sources and Citation Metrics
The 5th edition of the Research.com Best Mathematics Scientists in Italy Ranking is primarily derived from comprehensive bibliometric data obtained from OpenAlex and CrossRef, supplemented by multiple other reputable data sources. The citation-based metrics that form the foundation of this ranking were collected on January 12, 2026. Crucially, each scientist's position in the ranking is determined by their D-index (Discipline H-index), a metric that exclusively considers scholarly output and citation impact within the specific discipline of Mathematics. This ensures that the ranking accurately reflects the researchers' contributions and influence in their specialized area of study.
Scope of Research and Selection Criteria
The compilation of this ranking involved the examination of 279,971 scientist profiles identified from an extensive array of bibliometric databases spanning all scientific disciplines. Within this broad dataset, 126 scientists specializing in Mathematics were specifically analyzed. To qualify for inclusion, a researcher’s D-index had to be at least 30, and the majority of their tier publications needed to be within the domain of Mathematics. Additionally, notable awards and academic achievements in Mathematics were taken into account as supplementary factors.
The threshold for the D-index is carefully calibrated as an increment of 10, which varies depending on the estimated total number of scholars within each discipline. This approach is designed to ensure that the ranking captures the top one percent of leading researchers, while maintaining a proximity of 30% or less between a scientist’s overall H-index and their D-index. Such rigorous criteria reinforce the ranking’s ability to highlight distinguished experts whose impact is concentrated in their field of specialization.
Verification Practices and Methodological Rigor
The Research.com team acknowledges that raw bibliometric data alone cannot serve as a definitive measure of scholarly output. In light of this, all scientist profiles featured in the ranking underwent meticulous manual verification. Profiles were cross-correlated against publications indexed in a diverse spectrum of trustworthy sources to ensure accuracy and validity. While the quantity of papers published in prominent journals and conference proceedings does not directly influence a researcher’s position in this ranking, it represents a valuable secondary signal of a scholar’s contribution to their field.
The ranking positions are established based on the researchers’ D-index values, which are derived from data gathered from OpenAlex and CrossRef. These databases are internationally recognized as among the most authoritative and comprehensive bibliometric resources available to the research community.
