A scientist's position within the ranking is determined by their D-index (Discipline H-index), a refined metric that exclusively includes papers and citation metrics pertinent to the examined discipline—Ecology and Evolution in this case. The D-index enables a focused evaluation of scholarly impact restricted to the relevant academic domain, thereby providing a discipline-specific measure of influence and productivity.
Scope of Research and Qualification Criteria
Our assessment encompassed 279,971 scientist profiles drawn from a wide spectrum of bibliometric data repositories across all disciplines, with a targeted focus on identifying the top 10 scientists specializing in Ecology and Evolution within Colombia. To qualify for inclusion in this ranking, researchers were required to meet a minimum D-index threshold of 30. Additionally, the majority of each scientist's tier publications had to be concentrated in Ecology and Evolution to ensure domain specificity.
Scientist awards and field-related achievements were also examined as supplementary factors to further substantiate expertise and contributions within Ecology and Evolution. The D-index threshold for recognizing top researchers is strategically set with increments of 10, contingent upon the estimated total number of scholars in the discipline. This criterion concurrently guarantees that the top 1% of leading scholars in the field are represented in the ranking.
Another important quality control measure requires that the proximity gap between a scientist’s general H-index and their discipline-specific D-index does not exceed 30%. This policy affirms that the ranking reflects researchers whose principal impact aligns closely with Ecology and Evolution.
Verification and Validation Procedures
We acknowledge the inherent limitations of relying solely on raw bibliometric data as an absolute indicator of scholarly output and impact. Consequently, all scientist profiles included in the ranking underwent manual verification by our research team. This step involved cross-correlating publication records across a broad array of trustworthy sources to mitigate issues of data incompleteness or inaccuracies.
While the number of publications in prominent journals and conference proceedings does not directly influence a researcher's ranking position, it is considered a valuable secondary signal indicative of a scientist’s contribution to their area of expertise.
The final ranking position is thus established using each researcher’s D-index calculated from data sourced from OpenAlex and CrossRef, the most authoritative and accessible bibliometric databases available to the global research community.
