Sources of Data
The 5th edition of the Research.com Best Ecology and Evolution Scientists in Colombia Ranking is primarily based on comprehensive bibliometric data sourced from OpenAlex and CrossRef, complemented by multiple other trusted data repositories. These databases are recognized as authoritative and widely utilized within the scientific community for capturing scholarly publication and citation information. Bibliometric data used for devising citation-based metrics in this ranking were collected on January 12, 2026, ensuring the inclusion of the most recent and relevant scholarly outputs. A scientist's position in the ranking is determined by their D-index (Discipline H-index), a metric focusing solely on publications and citations pertinent to the analyzed discipline, in this case, Ecology and Evolution.
Scope of Research
The ranking is founded upon an extensive examination of 279,971 scientist profiles identified from a diverse array of bibliometric sources spanning all academic disciplines. Within this broad corpus, 10 scientists specializing in Ecology and Evolution were specifically analyzed for inclusion. To qualify for the ranking, a researcher must have achieved a D-index of at least 30, with the majority of their tier publications firmly categorized within the Ecology and Evolution discipline. In addition to the citation metrics, scientists’ notable awards and achievements in the field were also factored into the evaluation to ensure an encompassing assessment of their scholarly impact.
The threshold for the D-index used to consider top researchers is scaled in increments of 10 relative to the estimated total number of scholars within each discipline. This approach guarantees the incorporation of the top 1% of leading scholars in each field. Furthermore, candidates’ proximity between their overall H-index and their discipline-specific D-index is assessed, maintaining a difference of 30% or less to ensure the focus remains on true domain expertise.
Additional Verification Practices
Recognizing that raw bibliometric data alone cannot serve as an unequivocal measure of scholarly output, the researchers behind this ranking have undertaken rigorous manual verification of all scientist profiles. This process involved cross-correlation with publications listed in a wide spectrum of reputable and trustworthy sources to further validate profile accuracy and relevance.
While not directly influencing the ranking position, the number of papers published in high-impact journals and notable conference proceedings is considered a valuable secondary indicator of a researcher’s contribution to their specific scientific domain. The primary ranking metric remains each scientist’s D-index, which is derived from data aggregated from OpenAlex and CrossRef—two of the most prominent and reliable bibliometric databases available to the research community.
