Data Sources and Bibliometric Metrics
The 5th edition of the Research.com Best Business and Management Scientists in New Zealand Ranking was created using comprehensive bibliometric data primarily sourced from OpenAlex and CrossRef, supplemented by multiple additional databases to ensure wide coverage and accuracy. The citation-based metrics that underpin the ranking were collected as of January 12, 2026. A scientist’s position in the ranking is determined by their Discipline H-index, known as the D-index, which evaluates scholarly impact strictly within the specific discipline under review—in this case, Business and Management. This approach ensures that only papers and citations directly relevant to the field are included in the performance metrics.
Scope and Criteria of the Ranking
The ranking assessment was conducted across a broad spectrum of academic disciplines, examining 279,971 scientist profiles identified from diverse bibliometric data sources. Within this extensive dataset, 26 scientists specializing in Business and Management in New Zealand were identified and evaluated. To qualify for inclusion in this ranking, a researcher was required to have a D-index of at least 30, indicating a significant level of impactful work in the discipline. Additionally, the majority of a qualifying scientist’s tier publications needed to be within Business and Management. Consideration was also given to their awards and professional achievements in the field.
The D-index threshold for considering top researchers is dynamically set in increments of 10, proportionate to the estimated total number of scholars in each discipline. This methodology ensures that the ranking consistently reflects the top 1% of leading experts in the area. Furthermore, a close alignment between a scientist’s general H-index and their discipline-specific D-index is required, with a permissible discrepancy of no more than 30%, guaranteeing discipline-relevance of the scholarly impact measurement.
Verification and Validation Processes
Recognizing that raw bibliometric data alone cannot fully capture a researcher’s contributions, each scientist profile underwent meticulous manual verification. This process involved cross-correlating authorship and publications against a wide range of reputable sources to confirm accuracy and legitimacy. While the number of papers published in leading journals and conference proceedings is not a direct factor influencing the ranking position, it serves as a valuable secondary indicator of a scholar’s substantive contribution to the Business and Management research community.
The final positioning in the Research.com ranking is established exclusively through the D-index derived from data collected via OpenAlex and CrossRef—two of the most prominent and trusted bibliometric databases accessible to the research community globally.
