A researcher’s position within the ranking is determined by their D-index (Discipline H-index), a discipline-specific adaptation of the traditional H-index. The D-index only considers papers and citation counts relevant to the examined discipline—Animal Science and Veterinary in this case—allowing for a precise evaluation of scholarly impact within the field.
Scope and Eligibility Criteria
To establish a meaningful and focused ranking, Research.com examined 279,971 scientist profiles identified from an array of bibliometric databases covering a broad spectrum of scientific disciplines globally. Specifically, within the discipline of Animal Science and Veterinary, 1,000 scientist profiles were analyzed.
Qualification for inclusion in the ranking required a minimum D-index of 20, with the majority of tier publications authored by the scientist falling clearly within the Animal Science and Veterinary domain. In addition to bibliometric metrics, scientists’ awards, honors, and achievements pertinent to the field were considered as supplementary factors.
The threshold D-index for considering top researchers is dynamically set as increments of 10 according to the estimated population of scholars in each discipline, ensuring that approximately the top 1% of leading scholars are incorporated into the list. Furthermore, to ensure consistency and relevance between overall research impact and discipline-specific impact, only scientists with a proximity of 30% or less between their general H-index and their D-index were considered.
Verification and Validation Practices
Understanding that raw citation data alone cannot comprehensively evaluate scholarly output, the Research.com team implemented rigorous manual verification processes. Each scientist profile was thoroughly validated and cross-referenced against publications indexed in a wide variety of trustworthy and authoritative sources. This meticulous cross-correlation enhances the reliability and accuracy of the rankings.
Although not directly contributing to the ranking position, the number of papers published in prominent journals and key conference proceedings is recognized as a valuable secondary indicator of scientific contribution within Animal Science and Veterinary.
The foundation of the ranking position remains the researcher’s D-index, calculated based on data from OpenAlex and CrossRef, which are the most prominent and widely respected bibliometric platforms accessible to the research community.
