Bibliometric data for devising the citation-based metrics was harvested on January 12, 2026. The ranking methodology centers on the D-index (Discipline H-index), a refined metric that incorporates only those papers and citation counts pertinent to the specific discipline under examination, thereby offering a more precise representation of a researcher’s impact within Animal Science and Veterinary fields.
Scope of Research and Eligibility Criteria
The ranking was developed by examining profiles of 279,971 scientists identified across a wide spectrum of bibliometric data sources spanning all scientific disciplines. Within this dataset, 125 scientists specifically active in Animal Science and Veterinary research were rigorously evaluated.
To qualify for inclusion in this ranking, a scientist’s D-index must be at least 20. Furthermore, the majority of their top-tier publications needed to be directly related to Animal Science and Veterinary disciplines. Consideration was also given to scientists’ awards and notable achievements in the field, reflecting both scholarly impact and recognized contributions.
It is important to note that the D-index threshold is dynamically adjusted by increments of 10, depending on the estimated total number of scholars in each discipline, while ensuring that the top 1% of leading experts are incorporated. Additionally, a proximity threshold is applied whereby a researcher’s overall H-index and their discipline-specific D-index must not differ by more than 30%, thereby strengthening the relevance of their ranking within the domain.
Verification Practices and Ranking Methodology
Understanding that raw bibliometric data alone cannot serve as an absolute measure of scholarly output, the team behind this ranking undertook meticulous manual verification of all scientist profiles. Researchers’ records were cross-correlated against publications indexed in a broad range of trustworthy sources to ensure reliability and to minimize errors such as misattribution or incomplete data.
Although not a direct factor affecting ranking position, the count of publications in prominent journals and conference proceedings was also assessed as a valuable secondary signal highlighting a scientist’s contribution to advancing knowledge within Animal Science and Veterinary research.
The ranking positions are ultimately established based on a researcher’s D-index, as calculated from the data aggregated via OpenAlex and CrossRef, which remain the most prominent and well-established bibliometric databases available to the scientific community worldwide.
