Overview: University of the Ryukyus

The University of the Ryukyus (Ryūdai), established in 1950, is Japan’s southernmost national university. Located in Nishihara and Nakagusuku on Okinawa Island, Japan, it was founded as a postwar initiative to drive regional development and higher education. As a public, comprehensive research and teaching institution, Ryūdai comprises over 7,500 students, with seven undergraduate faculties and eight graduate schools. Its two main campuses, Senbaru and Uehara, support a diverse range of disciplines and research activities, positioning the university as the chief academic hub for the Ryukyu archipelago.
