Overview
New Mexico State University, also known as NM State or simply NMSU, is a public research institute of higher education located in Las Cruces, New Mexico. It is the oldest public institution in the state, having been founded in 1888. Additionally, it is one of the two flagship universities in the region, along with the University of New Mexico. Since its establishment, it has evolved into an elite institution with more than 20,000 enrollees each year.
Its main campus occupies about 360 hectares in Las Cruces City, surrounded by greenhouses and desert landscape. Besides being the university's academic center, it is also home to administrative departments, NMSU Golf Course, the New Mexico Farm and Ranch Heritage Museum, and other properties. The Burrell College of Osteopathic Medicine at New Mexico State University is also located within the campus, which serves as a learning center for medical students.
Furthermore, NMSU has several campuses and centers located in various parts of the country. These include Grants, Alamogordo, Carlsbad, and Doña Ana. These are home to various community colleges and learning centers that offer two-year programs, professional courses, and other lifelong learning opportunities.
The university offers degree programs to both undergraduate and graduate students. Several associate degrees are also available in some major and pre-professional programs. Students can choose to study specific programs offered by the university’s College of Arts and Sciences; College of Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Sciences; College of Education; College of Business; College of Health and Social Services; College of Engineering; Honors College; and Graduate School.
NMSU is also a top research institute and ranked by the National Science Foundation as a university with high research and development activities. It operates numerous research programs across a wide variety of interest areas. It is noted for being home to the state’s NASA Space Grant Program. The Department of Astronomy manages the Apache Point Observatory and the Sunspot Solar Observatory. It has also partnered with Reaction Engines Unlimited to develop various aerospace technologies.
Moreover, students enjoy a wide variety of activities outside their academic load. They can join any of the hundreds of student organizations, fraternities, sororities, and other formations to explore their hobbies and interests. The university is home to many athletic, recreational, and cultural events. Community members also have access to various facilities and services within the campus, such as housing, dining halls, health and wellness facilities, and student support services.
