Overview

The University of the Aegaean is a multi-campus higher education institution based in Greece. Like all universities in Greece, it is a public institution and is spread across six campuses throughout the Aegean archipelago. It offers a multitude of undergraduate and graduate programs, serving over 10,000 students. It is also an active member of the European Universities Association and has a strong international academic and research profile.

Founded in 1984, the University of the Aegean was established with the aim to introduce new interdisciplinary areas essential to the needs of the contemporary world. Some of these subject areas include cultural informatics, communication systems, mediterranean studies, and education design. Meanwhile, its postgraduate programs are aimed at the international level, with subjects covering biodiversity, European integration, and environmental policy and management.

The University of the Aegaean is currently divided into six schools: School of Social Sciences, School of the Environment, School of Business, School of Engineering, School of Sciences, and School of Humanities. Overall, it offers 17 undergraduate (BA or BSc) degree courses and 28 postgraduate (MSc or MA) programs. As a public institution, most of its educational and research activities are funded by the government of Greece.

The university also boasts of strong partnerships with several national, international, and European organizations. It serves as an important social and economic parameter in the Region of the South Aegean and the Region of the North with its passionate commitment to innovation strategies for human capital development, technology transfer, entrepreneurship, and career development. It is also affiliated with numerous research institutions, such as the the Hellenic Centre for Marine Research, the Natural History Museum of the Lesvos Petrified Forest, the Research and Training Institute of the East Aegean, and the Aegean Institute of the Law of the Sea and Maritime Law.

Moreover, the university is home to various student communities, including a number of academic, athletic, and cultural groups. Most of the students' activities, which are organized by cultural groups and student associations, are dedicated to the invigoration of the local insular societies. These programs enable students to learn more about local societies, their limitations, their particularities, as well as the appreciation of different insular landscapes.

Internationally, the University of the Aegean is known for its high-quality research and education. As part of the Erasmus+ program, the university actively supports the exchange of knowledge and ideas through its European and international mobility programs. These allow students of the university to gain intercultural experiences and trade knowledge, perceptions, and practices within a diverse and inclusive learning community.
