A state-run academic institution in Italy, the University of Calabria or UniCal is the first university in the country to offer residential facilities to students. UniCal is situated in the little hamlet of Aravacata in the picturesque town of Rende, which has a population of approximately 35,000, excluding UniCal’s resident students. The university was named after the region of Calabria in Southern Italy, and the name generally translates to the “toe of the boot of Italy,” in reference to the region’s location in the map.

The academic programs provided by UniCal cover a broad range of subjects divided among 14 departments, including biology, ecology, and earth sciences; business economics and law, mechanical, energy, and management engineering; and informatics, electronics, and system engineering; and more. There are currently a total of 80 degree courses offered in both undergraduate and master’s degree levels. Some of the master’s degree programs are taught in English, such as master’s degree courses in finance, computer science, computer engineering, management engineering, and modern philology. For foreign students who are interested in learning the language, UniCal offers an intensive 80-hour course on Italian language and culture for free. Aside from the free language lessons, international students can also apply for scholarship programs offered by the university’s residential center.

UniCal was founded in 1972 and its campus was designed by Dänen Martensson and Vittorio Gregotti, a renowned architect, businessman, and author who played a vital role in Italian Postmodernism. Modeled after British and North American campuses, UniCal was established with students’ residential blocks in mind, which was unlike other universities at the time.

As a research-intensive university, UniCal strongly supports scientific projects in the region of Calabria. The university also actively participates in national and international research as well as innovative research studies that have been recognized not only nationally but also globally.

Although a small-town public university, UniCal nurtures an innovative environment. It is also set to carve its place in the international scene by establishing bilateral agreements with universities from other countries within and outside Europe. UniCal takes part in the ERASMUS Programme, or the European Community Action Scheme for the Mobility of University Students, which helps UniCal students participate in exchange student projects. UniCal also collaborates with international organizations, including the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, the Food and Agriculture Organization, and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development.
