Overview

Syracuse University is a private research university known for promoting diversity and offering great financial aid to learners. Over a quarter of the institution’s student population is composed of people of color while around 80% of students are recipients of the school’s financial assistance program. Syracuse is also classified as an R1 University for its high research activity.

Syracuse academics is divided into 13 colleges and schools, delving into disciplines like architecture, arts and sciences, education, computer science, law, and management. It offers over 200 customizable majors, 100 minors, 200 graduate degree programs, and a plethora of online courses and certificate programs. Some of the institution’s most highly regarded courses are journalism, business, human development, architecture, education, and performance arts.

The university’s main campus features buildings with remarkable design; some were crafted in18th-century architecture on top of its collection of contemporary structures and fixtures. It is also home to a historic chapel (Hendricks Chapel), a sports dome for its renowned athletics program, several facilities for performing arts, museums, art galleries, and a library system that carries around 4.8 million volumes.

As far as research is concerned, Syracuse has over 30 research centers that tackle interdisciplinary studies, which include social sciences, fine arts, humanities, health, and STEM fields. It also has a significant number of sponsored research in its portfolio.

Founded in 1870, Syracuse traces its roots to the Genesee Wesleyan Seminary, which was established in 1831. The seminary was set to be expanded into a college but lacked the location to accommodate the property. At the time, Syracuse City was looking to bring in a university, and so, the institution was eventually developed there and received constant expansions.

Syracuse, as of 2020, houses over 15,000 undergraduates, more than 7,000 graduate students, and over 1,500 faculty members in its halls. The school has produced a long list of notable alumni, including United States vice president Joe Biden, news anchor Ted Koppel, screenwriter Aaron Sorkin, TV presenter and producer Dick Clark, and the first female Space Shuttle commander Eileen Collins. It is also affiliated with around 33 Olympic medal winners, three Nobel laureates, a Fields Medal recipient, and several winners of the Academy Awards.

Besides academics and research, Syracuse has a renowned sports program. Known as “The Orange,” the school participates in around eight male fields and 12 female fields, and these include lacrosse in which Syracuse has won 15 national championships.

As a university aspiring to be an inclusive institution that produces leaders that will change society, Syracuse ensures student success by embracing internationalization, experiential learning, and strengthening its liberal arts programs. It has partnered with other universities and institutions to widen its research competencies and the educational opportunities it provides.
