Overview

The Democritus University of Thrace (DUTH), in Komotini, Greece, is a public higher education system. It is named after the so-called laughing philosopher Democritus who hailed from the region of Thrace. The university was founded in 1973 and began accepting students a year after. Aside from the one in Komotini, it has campuses in Xanthi, Alexandroupolis, and Orestiada. It is also the only university in the region of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace.

The institution has eight faculties: Physical Education and Sports, Education Studies, Agricultural and Forestry Sciences, Health Sciences, Classical and Humanities Studies, Social, Political, and Economic Sciences, Law, and Engineering. These are also broken down into 20 departments with the Faculty of Law and the Faculty of Physical Education and Sports only having one department each. Some of the departments in other faculties are Agricultural Development, Medicine, Language, Philology and Culture of Black Sea Countries, Social Work, and Architectural Engineering.

The Democritus University of Thrace has 57 master’s and doctoral programs. Ten of these are without tuition. That is possible because the institution is funded by the Hellenic Republic and the Minister for National Education and Religious Affairs. These higher levels of studies are either interdepartmental, interinstitutional, transnational, or mono-departmental. The university also cooperates with international institutions for the enhancement of studies and for research projects.

Students can take advantage of the central library and the eight specialized libraries of the university. These are the Engineering or Polytechnic School Library, the Library of the School of Education, Library of the Departments of Legal-Social Administration, Political Science-Economics, Library of the Department of History and Ethnology, Library of the Department of Language, Philology and Culture of the Black Sea Countries, Library of the School of Physical Education and Sports Science, Library of the School of Health Sciences, and Library of the School of Agricultural and Forestry Sciences

Funding for the university and its research activities has been cut by the Greek government, affecting the institution’s research output. Nevertheless, the Democritus University of Thrace continues to strengthen research excellence, ensure the sustainable operation of its research infrastructure, and apply research results in real-world challenges by turning them into products or services or by licensing them through technology transfer. The institution also attracts donations and funding from home and abroad to realize its research goals. Additionally, as part of its research strategy, the university is working to improve its research structure to meet international standards like ISO 9000, ISO/IEC17025, and EN 45001.
