Data Sources and Ranking Methodology
The 4th edition of the Research.com Best Social Sciences and Humanities Universities in Austria Ranking draws upon a comprehensive ensemble of bibliometric data sources, with primary reliance on OpenAlex and CrossRef, complemented by multiple other authoritative databases. Bibliometric data crucial for establishing citation-based metrics were meticulously collected on 2024-11-27. The core determinant for each institution’s position in the ranking is the aggregate sum of D-indexes (Discipline H-index) belonging to all affiliated scholars whose predominant research area is Social Sciences and Humanities. The D-index uniquely incorporates only those publications and citation counts that specifically pertain to the relevant discipline under review.
Scope of Research and Selection Criteria
This year’s ranking encompasses an extensive analysis of 279,971 scientist profiles identified across various bibliometric repositories. Among these, 17,050 scientists specializing in Social Sciences and Humanities have been thoroughly examined. For inclusion, researchers needed to meet a minimum D-index threshold of 30, with the majority of their publications classified within Social Sciences and Humanities. Additionally, scientists' notable awards and achievements in the field were taken into account as a recognition of broader scientific impact.
Further calibration of the D-index threshold (in increments of 10) was applied, contingent upon the total number of recognized scholars within each discipline, thus guaranteeing that the top 1% of leading experts per field are duly represented. Consistency in research focus was ensured by requiring that the proximity between a scientist’s general H-index and their D-index not exceed 30%. Recognition of individual awards and distinctions within specific domains served as supplementary evidence in the selection process.
Verification and Quality Assurance Practices
Recognizing that raw bibliometric data alone cannot fully encapsulate the scholarly contributions of individual researchers, the creators of this ranking implemented meticulous manual verification protocols. Every scientist profile was carefully reviewed and cross-correlated against publications catalogued in a wide spectrum of reputable sources. While the count of papers in prominent journals and conference proceedings does not directly influence the ranking, it remains an important secondary indicator of a researcher's impact in their discipline.
Ranking positions are established based on each researcher’s H-index, as compiled by OpenAlex and CrossRef—widely acknowledged as the leading bibliometric databases available to the global research community.
