Individual institutional positions within the ranking are determined through the aggregated D-indexes (Discipline H-index) of all affiliated scholars whose principal publication domain is Political Science. The D-index is purpose-designed to exclusively account for publications and citations within the examined discipline, ensuring a discipline-focused representation of scholarly impact.
Scope and Methodology of Research
For the development of this ranking, a comprehensive review of 279,971 scientist profiles drawn from a variety of bibliometric sources was completed. Specifically, 2,158 scientists specializing in Political Science met the qualifying criteria and were subjected to further analysis.
To maintain a focus on established disciplinary impact, a minimum D-index threshold of 20 was set for individual inclusion, with scientists required to have a majority of their significant publications situated in Political Science. Moreover, scientists’ awards and achievements in the field were additionally factored in as qualitative measures.
The D-index threshold for identifying top researchers was established as an increment of 10, adjusted in accordance with the total number of scholars estimated for each discipline. This ensures the ranking reliably incorporates the top 1% of leading experts. Furthermore, a proximity of 30% or less between a scientist’s general H-index and their D-index was mandated to reinforce field specificity. Recognition through awards and documented achievements in Political Science was another qualifying component.
Verification Practices and Data Integrity
Research.com is acutely aware that raw bibliometric data alone cannot serve as the sole determinant of scholarly impact. Thus, all scientist profiles considered in this ranking underwent manual verification and were cross-referenced against an array of trusted publication sources to confirm their research focus and bibliometric standing.
While the total number of papers in high-impact journals and esteemed conference proceedings is not factored into the ranking algorithm, it is nevertheless acknowledged as a valuable supplementary indicator of a scientist’s contribution to their field. Each researcher's ranking position is established using their H-index as documented by OpenAlex and CrossRef—widely recognized as among the most authoritative bibliometric databases in the research community.
