For this edition, all bibliometric data informing the citation-based metrics were systematically collected on 27 November 2024. The core metric guiding the position of each institution in the ranking is the sum of D-indexes (Discipline H-index) achieved by all qualifying scholars affiliated with a given institution whose principal field of publication is Medicine. It is important to note that the D-index uniquely accounts for publications and citation data strictly within the examined discipline of Medicine, ensuring an accurate reflection of institutional and individual contributions specifically to this field.
Scope of Research Included in the Ranking
The current edition of the ranking is founded on an extensive evaluation of 279,971 scientist profiles drawn from a broad range of bibliometric data sources. Within this group, a focused analysis was conducted on 72,221 scientists whose primary area of research is Medicine.
To maintain a high standard of recognition, only scholars meeting a qualifying D-index threshold of 70 were considered, with the requirement that a majority of their significant publications lie within the field of Medicine. In addition, notable professional awards and accomplishments in Medicine were factored into the assessment to provide a more holistic view of each researcher’s impact. Depending on the number of scholars identified in each discipline, the D-index threshold for recognizing top researchers was set as increments of 10 to ensure appropriate representation, while always including the top 1% of scholars in each specialty. Furthermore, a proximity margin of 30% or less was maintained between a scientist’s general H-index and their D-index, reinforcing the discipline-specific focus.
Recognition of honors and awards in Medicine was also a key consideration during the evaluation, ensuring that exceptional achievements were acknowledged alongside quantitative metrics.
Additional Verification Practices
The Research.com team recognizes that while bibliometric data provides a valuable quantitative foundation, it is never a complete or absolute measure of a scholar’s contributions. To address this, every scientist profile included in the ranking underwent meticulous manual verification, with cross-referencing against publications listed in a wide array of trustworthy sources. This step ensures the integrity and authenticity of the data captured.
Although not directly contributing to a scientist’s rank within Research.com, the volume of papers published in highly esteemed journals and conference proceedings acts as a supplementary indicator of a researcher’s influence in their field. The primary determinant of ranking position is each scholar’s H-index as established from data curated via OpenAlex and CrossRef—two of the most prominent and well-established bibliometric databases accessible to the global research community.
