A critical metric used to establish a scientist’s position within this ranking is the D-index (Discipline H-index), which exclusively considers papers and citation counts within the examined discipline, ensuring that the evaluation is contextually relevant and discipline-specific.
Scope and Criteria of Research Coverage
This ranking rigorously examined 279,971 scientist profiles identified from a broad spectrum of bibliometric databases spanning all disciplines, honing in on 2,000 scientists specializing in Social Sciences and Humanities. To qualify for inclusion in the ranking, a scientist must have a D-index of at least 30, with a majority of their tier publications situated within the Social Sciences and Humanities domain. Additionally, awards and distinctions specifically associated with contributions to Social Sciences and Humanities were considered as complementary indicators of scholarly impact.
The threshold for the D-index is dynamically adjusted in increments of 10 based on the estimated total number of scholars within each discipline. This approach ensures that the ranking inclusively captures the top 1% of leading experts. Furthermore, a proximity criterion is applied, requiring that the difference between a scientist’s general H-index and their D-index be 30% or less, thereby validating consistency between overall impact and discipline-specific performance.
Verification and Methodology Assurance
The researchers responsible for this ranking acknowledge that raw bibliometric data cannot serve as an absolute measure of scholarly output or impact. Consequently, all scientist profiles underwent thorough manual verification, with cross-references made against publications indexed by a diverse range of trustworthy scholarly sources. Although the number of papers published in prestigious journals and conference proceedings does not directly influence a researcher’s ranking, it remains a valuable secondary signal reflective of their contribution to a specific scientific field.
