Data Sources and Metrics
The 5th edition of the Research.com Best Political Science Scientists in Switzerland Ranking is primarily grounded in bibliometric data sourced from OpenAlex and CrossRef, alongside multiple other reputable bibliometric databases. To ensure accuracy and relevance, citation-based metrics used for the ranking were collected as of January 12, 2026. A scientist’s position in the ranking is determined using the Discipline H-index (D-index), a refined metric that considers only those publications and corresponding citations pertinent to the examined discipline — Political Science in this case. This approach allows a focused and discipline-specific evaluation of research impact.
Scope of Research and Inclusion Criteria
This ranking comprehensively examined 279,971 scientist profiles drawn from various bibliometric sources spanning all scientific disciplines, including 53 individual scientists specializing in Political Science within Switzerland. To qualify for inclusion, scientists were required to have a minimum D-index of 20, with the majority of their tier publications belonging to the Political Science domain. Additionally, verified awards and achievements in the discipline were considered as supplementary factors that contribute to the overall standing of each researcher.
The threshold for the D-index is calibrated in increments of 10 relative to the estimated total number of active scholars in each discipline. This calibration ensures that the ranking consistently captures the top 1% of leading scholars within Political Science. Furthermore, to maintain relevance between a scientist’s overall productivity and their discipline-focused contributions, a proximity criterion stipulates that the difference between the general H-index and the D-index should not exceed 30%.
Verification and Validation Practices
Recognizing that raw bibliometric data alone cannot comprehensively evaluate scholarly output, the Research.com team employed rigorous manual verification of all scientist profiles included in the ranking. This process involved cross-referencing publications against numerous trusted sources to validate data integrity.
While the number of papers published in prestigious journals and conference proceedings does not directly affect ranking positions, such metrics serve as a valuable secondary indicator of a scientist’s contribution and influence within the Political Science community.
Final positions in the ranking were established using the D-index derived from information meticulously gathered from OpenAlex and CrossRef — two of the most prominent and widely recognized bibliometric databases accessible to the research community worldwide.
