The position of each scientist in the ranking is determined by their D-index (Discipline H-index), a refined metric that considers only those papers and citation counts directly relevant to the discipline under review—in this case, Medicine. This targeted approach allows for a more accurate representation of a researcher’s influence and contributions within their specific field, as opposed to general citation measures.
Scope of Research and Qualification Criteria
To construct this ranking, a total of 188,153 scientist profiles spanning all disciplines were examined, with a focused analysis of 3,000 scientists identified specifically within the field of Medicine. Eligibility for inclusion required that a scientist’s D-index reach a minimum threshold of 70. Additionally, a majority of the scientist's tier publications had to be situated within the domain of Medicine.
Award recognitions and notable achievements within the medical field were also considered to provide a holistic perspective on scholarly impact beyond purely bibliometric indicators. The D-index threshold is dynamically set in increments of 10 depending on the estimated number of scholars within each discipline, a process designed to maintain consistency while ensuring the incorporation of the top 1% of leading experts.
Furthermore, to preserve internal consistency and disciplinary focus, researchers were required to demonstrate a close alignment between their general H-index and D-index, with a maximum allowable proximity difference of 30%. This parameter ensures that the citation impact is concentrated and relevant to their Medicine-focused work.
Additional Verification Practices
Recognizing that raw bibliometric data cannot serve as an absolute measure of scholarly output, the Research.com team conducted extensive manual verification of all scientist profiles considered for the ranking. This involved cross-correlating publication records across a wide array of authoritative sources to validate the authenticity and discipline-specific relevance of the contributions.
While not directly influencing the ranking position, the quantity of papers published in prominent journals and rigorous conference proceedings represents a valuable secondary indicator of a researcher’s impact in Medicine. The primary ranking metric—the D-index—is derived exclusively from data consolidated from OpenAlex and CrossRef, two of the most respected and widely accessible bibliometric databases within the global research community.
