Data Sources and Citation Metrics
The 5th edition of the Research.com Best Medicine Scientists in Iceland Ranking is primarily derived from comprehensive bibliometric data sourced from OpenAlex and CrossRef, supplemented by multiple other authoritative databases. The bibliometric data utilized for determining citation-based metrics were collected on January 12, 2026. A scientist’s position within the ranking is based on the D-index (Discipline H-index), a refined metric that calculates impact by including only papers and citation data pertinent to the specific discipline under examination, ensuring targeted and relevant evaluation of scholarly contributions.
Scope of Research and Qualification Criteria
This ranking thoroughly examined 188,153 scientist profiles compiled from a variety of bibliometric data sources across all academic disciplines. Within the Medicine domain, 12 scientists based in Iceland were assessed. To qualify for inclusion in the ranking, a scientist's D-index had to be at least 70. Additionally, a majority of their tier publications were required to be within the field of Medicine, reinforcing the focus on discipline-specific excellence. Awards and notable achievements in Medicine also contributed to the holistic assessment of each candidate.
The threshold for the D-index is dynamically determined, set in increments of 10 based on the estimated total population of scholars within each discipline. This approach ensures that the top 1% of leading experts are consistently incorporated into the list. Furthermore, to ensure discipline-focused relevance while maintaining proximity to overall scholarly impact, only scientists whose general H-index and D-index differ by 30% or less were considered.
Additional Verification Practices
Recognizing that raw bibliometric data alone cannot capture the full scope of a scholar’s influence, the researchers behind this ranking conducted manual verification of all scientist profiles. This process involved cross-correlating publication records with an extensive range of trustworthy, independent sources to authenticate and contextualize the data. While the number of papers published in prominent journals and conference proceedings does not directly affect a researcher’s position in the Research.com ranking, it serves as a valuable secondary indicator of a scientist's contribution and engagement within the specific field.
The ranking positions are firmly established based on each researcher’s verified D-index, derived from the most prominent and widely recognized bibliometric databases available to the research community—OpenAlex and CrossRef. This careful and rigorous methodology ensures robustness and credibility. For detailed insight into the full methodology underpinning this ranking, please visit our methodology page.
