For the creation of this ranking, all citation-based metrics were compiled and analyzed from data collected on January 12, 2026. The ranking system uses a researcher’s D-index (Discipline H-index) as the fundamental criterion for positioning. The D-index specifically measures scholarly impact within an explicitly defined discipline by including only publications and citations relevant to that field, thus providing a focused and meaningful evaluation of a researcher’s contributions to Law.
Scope of Research and Selection Criteria
This edition examined a total of 279,971 scientist profiles identified across a variety of bibliometric sources spanning all disciplines, from which a subset of 8 scientists specifically in the area of Law was closely evaluated. To qualify for inclusion in the ranking, a researcher’s D-index had to be at least 20, ensuring a high standard of disciplinary impact. Additionally, a majority of the candidate’s tier publications were required to be in the area of Law, reflecting a strong and sustained contribution within this field.
Scientist awards and notable achievements pertinent to Law were also considered as supplementary factors, ensuring recognition of broader indicators of scholarly excellence beyond citation metrics alone. The D-index threshold used to identify top researchers is calibrated in increments of 10 depending on the estimated total number of scholars in each discipline, while guaranteeing inclusion of the top 1% of leading experts. Moreover, a proximity criterion is applied such that the difference between a scientist’s general H-index and their D-index does not exceed 30%, ensuring disciplinary focus without overlooking overall scholarly influence.
Verification and Evaluation Practices
Recognizing that raw bibliometric data alone cannot serve as an absolute measure of scholarly output, the Research.com team undertook careful, manual verification of all scientist profiles in the ranking. This included cross-correlating listed publications against a wide range of credible sources to confirm accuracy and relevance.
While not directly influencing the researcher’s position within the ranking, the quantity of papers published in prominent journals and conference proceedings was considered a valuable secondary indicator of the scientist’s contribution and visibility in the field of Law. The primary ranking metric remains the D-index derived from information collected from OpenAlex and CrossRef.
