What general biology courses are required for PharmD admission?

Pharm.D. programs commonly ask for introductory college biology intended for science majors. A school may specify a two-course sequence, name acceptable course equivalents, or describe the biological topics it expects. "General biology" on a transcript is not enough by itself: course level, content, and sequence can affect whether it qualifies.

These are pre-professional prerequisites completed before the professional Pharm.D. curriculum, not courses earned as part of that curriculum. Applicants considering Pharm.D. programs with an accelerated format should check the same admission requirements; a shorter professional schedule does not, by itself, reduce biology prerequisites.

Do PharmD programs require biology labs with general biology courses?

Many programs require laboratory work alongside general biology, but the acceptable arrangement varies. A school might accept an integrated lecture-and-lab course or require separately listed lab credits. If your transcript lists only a lecture, do not assume a lab taken in another subject fills the gap.

Lab format matters, too. Even if you are exploring pharmacy schools offering online Pharm.D. study, that does not establish that the school accepts an online undergraduate biology lab. Ask admissions whether your particular lab format, dates, and institution meet its policy before registering.

How many biology credits do PharmD prerequisites typically include?

There is no universal biology-credit minimum for Pharm.D. admission. A commonly encountered requirement is a two-semester introductory sequence with labs, but schools count semester credits, quarter credits, and integrated labs differently. Read the school's stated biology requirement rather than applying a credit total from another program.

Count all required biology coursework when budgeting: an additional lab or second course can add tuition and delay enrollment. When comparing a low-cost online pharmacy doctorate, include the cost of any prerequisites you still need, not just advertised professional-program tuition.

Does PharmD accreditation affect general biology prerequisite requirements?

The Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) accredits professional pharmacy education programs; it does not set one general biology course list for every applicant. Schools establish and evaluate their own admission prerequisites. ACPE professional-program accreditation is also distinct from an institution's accreditation and, for distance education, its authorization to enroll students in a particular state.

Verify the professional program's current ACPE status separately from its biology policy. Listings of pharmacy programs with shorter completion times can include credentials other than a Pharm.D.; a short pharmacy-related program should not be assumed to lead to pharmacist licensure. A Pharm.D. graduate must still meet the applicable state board's licensing requirements.

Other Things You Should Know About PharmD

Do I need a biology major to apply to pharmacy school?

No. Pharm.D. programs evaluate required coursework and other admission criteria; they do not generally require applicants to major in biology. Check each school's rules for your intended entry pathway.

Do I need a bachelor's degree before starting a Pharm.D.?

Not at every school. Some admit applicants who complete specified undergraduate prerequisites without earning a bachelor's degree. Confirm the degree and credit requirements for each program.

Is the PCAT required for Pharm.D. admission?

The Pharmacy College Admission Test (PCAT) was retired in January 2024, so it is not a current exam applicants can schedule. Review each school's present application requirements rather than relying on older testing advice.

Can I work as a pharmacy technician while completing prerequisites?

Potentially. Technician registration, certification, and supervision rules vary by state and employer. Technician work may provide exposure to pharmacy practice, but it does not replace biology prerequisites or qualify someone for pharmacist licensure.
